Seizure Awareness

These last few days have been filled with many ups and downs. Wednesday evening, Sam worked late and Mandy was home alone. Peyton went running by her into the bedroom in sheer panic and started having a seizure. It was very scary. Mandy came running in and rushed to be with Peyton. However, his seizure was much longer than any he has previously had before, and Mandy was scared. To be honest, I was petrified. I tried to help Mandy calm Peyton and keep him from hurting himself, but I gave into my fears and hid under the bed. Eventually Peyton came out of the seizure, but both Mandy and I were shook up. It took Peyton a few minutes to find his meow and a little bit longer for him to find his legs. He seemed to shake off the seizure once he started moving. We were all trying to act calm in a very stressful situation. Mandy called Sam and I could tell in her voice she was upset, although she tried to hide her fears from us. Sam came home, and worked from home the rest of the night. He stayed up late working, which helped Mandy get some good sleep after being so upset. She needed to sleep off the fears.

The next morning Mandy called Cat Doctor and talked with her. Because Peyton’s seizures are becoming closer together and are gradually getting more severe, they agreed it was time to put Peyton on daily medication that will hopefully suppress the seizures. Mandy has fought putting Peyton on this medication for a long as possible, and has shed many tears over the decision in the last few days. We have all been praying that the seizures would just stop. Mandy has done everything to rule out any possible outside source as being the cause of the seizure. She makes our food, she keeps us calm, and she always tries to shelter us from stressful situations. However, the blood work shows that the seizures are not caused by anything chemical. Sometimes, rarely, but sometimes cats just have them. The last seizure was so scary that I am glad they are doing something that will attempt to prevent these horrible attacks in the future. Peyton seems relieved to be taking the medication, because he didn’t fight Mandy at all when she told him what the medication would do. In fact, he took the pill willingly—right out of her hand!

Peyton was not ready to discuss this yet, but he thought it was acceptable if I told you, that way you can all pray that his medication works, that there are no serious side effects, and that the seizures will seize.

Onto a much lighter note, it has been a little cooler and Mandy has let us play outside. In fact, she has been outside some too. Every day she walks around the big tub, multiple times, and we play outside with her. She used to splash around in there, but I think the water is a little cold, because she can’t seem to ease her mountain of a tummy into the water.

This morning, Mandy took the plant scissors out back and went to work cutting the dead off of our potted plants. Sam pushed around the grass eater, so I didn’t stay outside long, but Peyton was determined to enjoy the beautiful weather. He hid under the table and watched as Mandy cut the plants and Sam pushed the grass eater. It was noisy out there, but Peyton was brave!

Mandy says we have company coming tonight! Yesterday she trimmed our claws, and told us how handsome we were. Today, I am going to make sure my fur is extra clean so I can impress our company tonight. Maybe the company will bring me toys!
